Agarwood is the dried resinous heartwood of trees such as Aquilaria sinensis or Aquilaria agallocha from the Thymelaeaceae family. It serves as a type of wood, incense, and traditional Chinese medicine. When the heartwood of the agarwood tree is injured or infected by fungi (such as Phialophora parasitica), it secretes a large amount of resin to aid in healing. During this process, a fragrant resinous substance is produced. Due to its high density, it can sink in water, earning it the name “sinking incense” or “Chenshui Xiang.”
